it’s already friday and i haven’t posted an advent song yet! i finished finals this week (last undergrad finals ever!) and so far, christmas break has involved a lot of driving, but today i did laundry and knit and did a little bit of christmas shopping and cuddled with my puppy and later we’re going caroling. what a way to start my break! anyway. the song for today is an old hymn, and it has wonderful lyrics, but it’s performed on Jenny & Tyler’s Christmas album, “Love Came Down”, which is definitely worth investing in (you can find it here).

here are the lyrics to break forth o beauteous heavenly light. i find that the chorus is a beautiful advent prayer and that the second verse really captures the spirit of advent. enjoy!

break forth, o beauteous heavenly light,
and usher in the morning;
ye shepherds, shrink not with affright,
but hear the angel’s warning.
this Child, now weak in infancy,
our confidence and joy shall be,
the power of satan breaking,
our peace eternal making.

break forth, o light shine down
restore, these barren grounds
behold our Savior now
break forth o beauteous light

break forth, o beauteous heavenly light,
to herald our salvation;
He stoops to earth—the God of might,
our hope and expectation.
He comes in human flesh to dwell,
Our God with us, Immanuel,
the night of darkness ending,
our fallen race befriending.

break forth, o light shine down
restore, these barren grounds
behold our Savior now
break forth o beauteous light

shine Your light down
shine Your light

break forth, o light shine down
restore, these barren grounds
behold our Savior now
break forth o beauteous light
