hola amigos! i am enjoying a lovely cloudy day from my homestay here in guatemala right now 🙂 The first 48 hours here have been overwhelming, but i really am enjoying myself so far. we are staying in a town called solola, which is a very traiditional mayan town near lake atitlan. we’re in the mountains and during the rainy season (aka now) you can stand on the roof of our house and not see the ground because we are literally in the clouds. yesterday we went on a tour of solola and then went to the nearby, more touristy town of panajachel and went on a scavenger hunt and spent the night in a hostel there. we had a great time. this morning, we woke up and took the bus back to solola and ate a quick breakfast before heading out to chichi, a town a ilttle over an hour of public transportation away, which has the largest market in the country. it was busy but people were very friendly and we got a few really good bargains. we just got back and just about everyone is ready for a quick nap before dinner. tomorrow we’ll get started on the actual volunteer work 🙂 it’s obvious that the year long volunteers have fallen in love with this region, and i can see why. i can’t wait to get to know guatemala better! my spanish is okay, and hopefully will continue to improve 🙂 also, so far the strangest thing about guatemala: you dont flush toilet paper. no really. you throw it in a trash can next to the toilet. this is true throughout the country. i dont really understand, but i’m a little concerned that i’m going to come back to the states after these 4 weeks and accidentally throw my tp in the trash. we’ll see!
love and miss everyone, i’ll try to update again soon!
